Adventure Trips FAQs
What do I need to bring?
We have a comprehensive list of all the gear that we provide and that you need to bring. You’ll find that you already have most of the necessary items (not specialized). In some locations that we operate, weather can change quickly and it’s imperative to be prepared. By following the recommended equipment list you’ll be warm on the river and dry and comfortable in camp.
How do I sign up?
You can contact us 7 days a week by e-mail. Just click on the “contact us” or “reservation” links on the website. You may also call us anytime on our toll-free number 800-775-6976. We look forward to talking to you and answering any questions you might have.
What’s the best way to document the trip?
Some of our trips will have a professional videographer to document all of the action and activities of the trip. This is a great opportunity to come home with a professionally edited documentary of the entire trip. On adventures that don’t have a videographer, your guides will always have a safe, dry place for you to store your cameras so that you can fully document your trip to these amazing destinations. For more information about how you can take home a trip video, please contact the Global Descents office.
How’s the food?
We have mastered the art of creating great cuisine in remote locations. We prepare regional cuisine highlighting specialties of each area. We invite you to sit back, relax and enjoy the warm campfire as we prepare your meal to remember.
What if I’m a vegetarian or have any food allergies?
No problem! One of our main focuses on our trips is delicious, high-quality food. Our menus are able to accommodate all dietary preferences and/or restrictions. Please be sure to let us know during the booking process.
What if I get sick or injured?
All trips are equipped with a satellite phone on and off the river. All of our guides are trained Wilderness First Responders or better, including CPR and Swiftwater Rescue training. In each of our travel destinations, we have specific plans for evacuation in the event of an emergency. Depending on the incident, we are able to get you to a quality medical facility—either within the destination or back in your country of origin—quickly and efficiently. Please talk to our Global Descents representative about purchasing the recommended travel insurance for your next adventure.
Is altitude a concern?
Travelling over some of the many passes in Peru and India deserve a little more respect than other high altitude destinations because these regions lie over 2600 meters (8500 ft). People in good health should not be alarmed, however, if you have a medical condition such as high blood pressure, heart or lung disease, please take the advice of a doctor who has experience with the effects of altitude or call us for recommendations.
What if I’ve never been rafting?
No Problem! There is no prior experience required to do any of our trips. Rafting requires, first and foremost, a good, positive and excited attitude! Know the difficulty of your trip and be sure that that is what you’re looking for. Then, leave the rest up to us. Our guides are the most professional in the industry and are experts at making you feel comfortable while training you to be able to perform in the raft. We think this is the greatest activity on the planet and you will too!
How good of shape do I need to be in?
Some trips are more strenuous than others. Don’t hire a personal trainer, just use common sense. In general, we want you to enjoy your trip to the fullest and be able to do any and all activities available. Your guides will always be able to help you out whenever you need on the trip. Please just call us with any questions or concerns you may have about the strenuousness of each adventure.
What about safety?
A guided river expedition with Global Descents will offer you the comfort, security and service of a U.S company abroad. We pride ourselves as true professionals, and have systems in place to ensure a safe and fun filled adventure.
Is rafting dangerous?
Just like crossing a busy street in the city, there are inherent risks involved in all of these activities. Rafting is no different and should be treated with the same amount of respect. It isn’t Disneyland and there are no tracks underneath the boats. However, at Global Descents, we do everything we can to minimize the risks on the river. This includes the use of the latest technology in rafting and safety equipment, safety kayakers as well as safety rafts or catarafts.
What if I’m traveling to a malaria risk zone?
While traveling in a malaria risk zone, you’ll want to take the following precautions.
• Apply insect repellent to exposed skin. Although not preferred by everyone, insect repellent with a small percentage of DEET has proven to be the most effective.
• Wear long sleeved clothing and long pants while in camp and whenever possible.
• Use a mosquito net if you’re sleeping outdoors and not in a tent.
• If sleeping in a tent, be sure to keep doors sealed at all times whether you’re inside of the tent or not.
• The best way to protect yourself is to take the recommended malaria prophylaxis before, during and after your stay in the malaria risk zone. Be sure that the medication you choose is effective for the specific zone in which you’re traveling.
• For any other information, please contact the Center for Disease Control, www.cdc.gov or Global Descents at 1-800-775-6976.
How many people are on my trip?
We are a small family run business and like for our trips to feel the same. Our maximum trip size varies for each destination, however, the average trip size is between 10-12 people. Our trip size and guide to client ratio insures that everyone is completely taken care of and your safety is our top priority.
What is the weather like?
The weather varies from destination to destination. However, we choose the greatest river trips in the world during the optimum time of the year to run them. Therefore, it usually means the weather is warm and dry and the water levels are great. I wish I could say this was always the case, but, only a fool would predict the weather. Just give us a call with any questions about temperatures or weather in each destination and follow the recommended gear list.
How do I get there?
The Global Descents travel desk is able to help you with any and all of your international flight arrangements. We have relationships with a variety of international flight brokers and are usually able to secure the best fares available. For assistance please give us a call and we can help to find you the best options available.
Can our group charter or customize a trip?
Absolutely, we quite often have groups that want an exclusive trip for themselves or are interested in tweaking the itinerary to include a favorite activity. Although, we have designed these itineraries because we feel they are the best available, we are constantly customizing dates and itineraries for groups that are looking for something that isn’t “advertised.” Just let us know what you’re looking for and we will make it happen!
