Arequipa Description
Founded in 1540 by Manuel Garci de Carbajal, the city’s name comes from a Quechua phrase meaning “come, stay.” Arequipa is the second largest city in Peru and is almost entirely built out of sillar, a kind of white, volcanic stone. This accounts for its legend as the ‘white city.’ Its districts show great contrast between colonial heritage and native influence. The city is surrounded by three towering volcanoes: El Misti, Chachani and Picchu Picchu. One of the most famous sites in Arequipa is the convent of Santa Catalina. Built as a city within the city in 1580 and expanded in the 17th century, 450 nuns lived there for more than 400 years making it one of the biggest convents in the world. Numerous stories and legends circulated throughout the city about the mysterious convent until it opened its doors to the public in 1970.
