Rio Futaleufu River - A whitewater
rafting paradise!
Originating on the desolate Andean peaks of the Argentina/Chile border, the "Futa" trickles westerly through the vast Patagonian wilderness, gaining momentum while tributaries such as Rio Azul (Blue River) and Rio Chico (Little River) swell its volume.
Flowing through a colossal granite valley comparable to northern California's Yosemite, the aquamarine water of the Futa rages in a whitewater deluge, boasting some of the world's greatest rapids. Alfombra Magia, Mas o Menos, and Escala de Jacobo are just a few of the many spectacular rapids featured on the Futa.
Andean condors, growing to four feet in height and bearing wingspans of up to ten feet in width, drift the currents of the skies as Ringed Kingfishers, Crested Caracaras, and Austral Parakeets enliven the riverside forest.
The people of the Futa valley, some of the friendliest in the world, embrace visitors into their world reminiscent of a bygone era - wood-fired cook stoves, candlelit homes, and ox-drawn vehicles remain the common modes of existence in the Futa Valley.
